Thank Hippies for The Tie Dye T-shirt
Hippies made the tie dye t-shirt popular in the 1960's, however
the art of tie dye has been around since the eight century. Shibori, as it was
known then originated in Japan and was used to create intricate designs for
Japanese kimonos.
Tie
Dye Your T-shirt - Choose Carefully
There are two popular types of dye available to tie dye your t-shirt.
Fibre reactive dye and all purpose dye.
Fibre reactive dye is recommended for two reasons - one, it can
be prepared in advance and two, used on the day at room temperature (the most
important one if you intend holding a tie dye party for children). You will need
to keep it refrigerated if you prepare it in advance of a week.
All purpose dye requires it to be used hot – in some cases
boiling hot – not a good idea for a Child's tie dye t-shirt party.
And here is a tie
dye t-shirt no mess method for very young children.
On
the day of the tie dye t-shirt party there will be enough to do so prepare your
dye and tie some of the t-shirts prior. Keep a few to tie on the day to get the
kids involved. Do a tie dye t-shirt for each child to take home as a memento. If
you decide to use fibre reactive dyes they will have to take their tie dye
t-shirt home wet, in a plastic bag but that is a small price to pay for the
safety of not having the danger of boiling water present.
Tie Dye
T-shirt Instructions
Fibre Reactive Dyes
-
For your tie dye t-shirt you will need:
-
White cotton T-shirts, at least 80% cotton. If you decide
to use stitching - instead of or as well as tying - use cotton otherwise the
fabric will stay white where the stitching was, before it was removed. On
the other hand you may like the effect.
-
Dust mask (recommended) – wear when measuring out dyes.
-
Sodium carbonate (soda ash).
-
Suggested tie dye t-shirt colours – yellow, fuchsia,
turquoise and black. Procion fibre reactive dye is highly recommended. Do
not use all purpose dyes – some require you to hold the fabric in boiling
water for a long time. Not good if you have little ones involved, however
should you decide to use this method (quicker reaction time), see
instruction below.
-
Bucket, wooden spoon, rubber gloves, measuring cup, strong
thread (dental floss works well), rubber bands, clothes peg(s) squeeze
bottle, (the same type as used for applying hair dyes) and small spray
bottle.
-
WORK OUTDOORS
-
To get a clear pattern to your tie dye t-shirt it helps to
keep the tying and stretching very tight.
-
1.Pre wash all t-shirts to remove finishes that may hinder
the dye from getting in to the fabric
-
2.Just before dying, pre-soak t-shirts in sodium carbonate
(soda ash) solution mixed one cup per gallon of water for 30 to 60 minutes.
Tip: Tie your t-shirts before you soak them in sodium carbonate. This way
you can work without the need to wear gloves - wet them with plain water,
tie and then soak.
-
3.There are a number of ways to tie the t-shirts, here are
a few. You can use one or as many as you like.
-
a. Choose where you want the design and pull up the fabric
through a partly closed fist to make a long tube. Wrap thread, twine or a
rubber band tightly around the base of the “tube”. The intention is to
dye the tube while the rest of the t-shirt remains white.
-
b. Before you pull up the t-shirt as in a. above you can
place objects in the centre of the “tube”. Any small object that takes
your fancy e.g. bottle top (serrated or plain), fold back clip, pebbles or
small figurines.
-
c. To make a different effect you can also tie at intervals
along the tube
-
d. Fold the t-shirt in vertical pleats to obtain horizontal
stripes or horizontal pleats for vertical stripes.
-
e. An alternative to tying is stitching. Use running or
overcast stitching and gather the fabric into tight bunches. Stitch along a
traced image if you wish.
-
f. Lay the t-shirt on a flat smooth surface and remove all
the wrinkles, make a pleat across and attach a clothes peg in the centre.
Twist as much as you like and then tie it off at the “base”. You might
want to experiment with this one.
-
4.Prepare your dyes up to a week in advance. Dissolve urea
in water, 1 tablespoon per cup. Dissolve dye in urea solution. Follow
directions re measurements etc. When mixing dyes to get various colours, mix
it dry. Make sure you use a face mask and keep jars of dye closed when not
in use.
-
5.Apply the dyes by spraying them on with spray bottles.
It’s best to wear gloves as sodium carbonate is slightly caustic plus the
dyes are difficult to remove from the skin. Another way is to use a squeeze
bottle and drip the dye directly on to the t-shirt. Another way to get a
different effect is to drip colour remover on to the t-shirt after you add
the dye(s)
-
6.Make sure to keep the tie dye t-shirt wet for 8 to 24
hours. To succeed in keeping it sufficiently damp you may need to put it in
a plastic bag.
7.Now
you need to wash your tie dye t-shirt to help make it colour fast. These
washing instructions are an absolute must if you want the dyes to remain and
not run every time you wash the fabric. Don’t take short cuts. Wash light colours
separately or wait at least 24 hours before washing, in fact do this with
all the t-shirts. Important wash (with detergent) in cold water first to
remove the sodium carbonate otherwise your tie dye t-shirt may not become colourfast.
No need to rinse first but if you do so, make sure it is in cold water. Wash
two more times (with detergent) in the hottest hot water you can, then rinse
twice. Just to be sure, wash your tie dye t-shirt separately from other
clothes for the first couple of uses. It should now be 100% colourfast. Iron
and wear.

keep the tying and stretching very tight.
-
1.Pre wash all t-shirts to remove finishes that may hinder
the dye from getting in to the tie dye t-shirt.
-
2.Tie as per “3” above
-
3.Follow the manufacturers instructions which include
bringing the dye solutions to a boil. Continue to boil or turn off the heat
source (dependent on the instructions) and dip the section of the t-shirt to
be dyed into the solution. The longer you leave the fabric in the solution
the more intense the colour. You can also use a squeeze bottle or spray to
apply the dye. For a different effect drip colour remover on to the fabric.
-
4.Rinse the tie dye t-shirt in cold water. Squeeze out the
excess moisture and roll the tie dye t-shirt in a towel. Let it partly dry,
then remove the rubber bands, stitching and or thread. Shake out as many
wrinkles as possible, let it dry completely and then
iron.
No
Mess Tie Dye T-shirt
Great For 3 Year Old And Up
-
How to tie dye a t-shirt without the need to tie.
This one is good for very young and older children, it’s not at all
messy and they will love it.
-
1.Small bottles of fabric paints - a few different
colours.
-
2.Put paints into small spray bottles add water
and shake well. The smaller the spray bottle the better for the little
ones hands.
-
3.Hang t-shirt(s) out-doors.
-
4.Spray t-shirts with the different colour paints
- From various distances.
- Change the nozzle setting frequently.
-
5.Dry t-shirts as per the instruction on the paint
containers.
-
There is bound to be one child (boy usually) who
will use the spray bottles as a water pistol and so it’s a good idea
to dress the children in old clothes, just in case they decide to dye
each other.
You won’t end up with a “true” tie
dye t-shirt but it may look like one and I think everyone will be happy
with the result.
Colour
Mixing for Your Tie Dye T-shirt
-
Here are some well known facts about colour. Print
and keep them handy.
- lots of fuchsia + little yellow = red
- red + yellow = orange
- yellow + turquoise = green
- lots of turquoise + little fuchsia = blue
- Turquoise + fuchsia = purple
To avoid a muddy mix do not place “opposite” colours
next to each other, such as red near green; blue near orange; yellow
near purple.
Have fun with your tie dye t-shirt and be
careful when using hot water.
The
Easy Way to Tie Dye Your T-shirt
If you would like a tie dye t-shirt but either don’t
have the area to perform the process or the fortitude to try your hand at
the art of tie dyeing then don’t despair. Garment dyeing and washing is
available at a number of retail outlets and you get to decide on the
design and colours.
-
Some of the choices available at the outlets
include:
-
- Pigment dyeing produces a soft distressed look
-
- Stonewashing, you know what it looks like –
the same as stonewashed jeans. Tie dye first and then stone wash next.
-
-Over dying is a process where they take a dark
coloured t-shirt wash out the deep colour of the black and give it a
blotchy look with light coloured streaks. You can have it tie dyed to
the colour(s) of your choice.
-
Now if you are still not happy with your unique tie
dye t-shirt then you may also get it screen printed with just about
anything you can imagine.
If you are going to do more than one
process to your t-shirt then think about what colours you will use for
each process. You need to get colour combinations and designs that will
work together, otherwise good bye t-shirt plus all the money you spent
along the way.
But if you decide to do your own tie dye
t-shirt then follow the above instructions.
Tie
Dye T-shirt Copyright
Pepperlibido tshirts and tops or its owners do not claim Copyright on
Instructions for how to screen print, tie dye and make a t-shirt quilt.
How could we, how could anyone? Take tie dying for example, been around
since the eight century. Yet people do claim copyright for tie dye
instructions. And I’m not just referring to the copyright statement of
claim on the footer of most web sites.
There are some web site owners who jump up and down and
curse any other site that gives instructions on how to do any of the above
mentioned unless credit is given to them. They promise action in the
courts unless the instructions are removed. These people must have an ego
the size of the planet.
If you showed 100 people how to tie dye and then asked
each one of them to write down instructions “how to tie dye” how many
instructions do you think would be exactly the same, almost word for word?
Likely most of them. So for any one person to claim Copyright – is a big stretch.
