There is a limit to the quality of fabric and workmanship that goes into any garment and the t-shirt is no different. The portion of the purchase price applicable to and that goes beyond that limit sets the level of class distinction for that garment.

The period where the t-shirt was a social leveller is well and truly over. Now that celebrities and the fashion conscious have included designer t-shirts among their garments of distinction it has joined the class system.

For the average shopper selecting quality t-shirts is not scientific. I could carry on about the weight and weave of fabric used in the manufacture of quality t-shirts but none of this information is usually found on the label and difficult to measure for the average shopper.

Is It a Good Quality T-shirt?

If I said 180g or 190g was a good fabric weight. How on earth would you know if the t-shirt you are inspecting is 180 or 190g? Well you most likely wouldn't.

So use your instinct, feel the t-shirt, check the stitching and the transfer or print. If the print is hard chances are it will crack after the first or second wash. The fabric should feel strong as should the stitching. Good quality cotton will feel soft to touch.

Look for firm even knitting and rounded knit loops when you buy cotton t-shirts, a t-shirt with these features will not shrink out of shape. Examine fabric carefully, to help see the loops, stretch the fabric and hold it up to the light or over a contrasting background.

With some fabrics you can see the shape of the loop easier on the wrong side. The more rounded the loops the better the fabric. Good quality fabric will be tested for shrinkage so shrinkage need not be a consideration. T-shirts with thin places in the fabric or long thin knit (stretched) loops are inferior quality.

No blends, they are not as comfortable, they are more difficult to iron (what’s that?) and are not as cool in summer or as warm in winter. Australia and Turkey grow the world's best cotton. Next the colour and then the design.

If you are buying online about the only thing you can go by is the price. Any online site advertising 'high' quality t-shirts at cheap t-shirt prices may be suspect. Well the quality may be suspect at least.

Not all T-shirts are Created Equal

For clothing products, in particular t-shirts, selling on the net is very very competitive and to compete online stores have to keep prices very low.

When looking for quality t-shirts on the web I use the following assumption. If an online store is advertising 'high quality’ goods at a very low price then I question the quality. Most online stores drop the emphasis on quality so as to keep prices down.

On the other hand an online store asking prices like you would expect to find offline most likely have good quality t-shirts or products or they just would not survive on the net.

And if it's a Japanese t-shirt then chances are it is of excellent quality.
