The
1960's T-shirt! Embraced by Youth Culture
Now the 1960's t-shirt and almost every youth culture since the
1950’s have embraced the t-shirt in some way. Mods, Rockers, Hippies, Bikers
and anti Vietnam war groups all wore t-shirts with their respective slogans. The
Anti Vietnam war groups were the most “vocal”.
By
the late 1960's we saw the Hippies using tie
dying to create psychedelic like images on their t-shirts. I think God may
have personally had a hand in putting an end to this.
The 1960's saw the introduction of the long
sleeve t-shirt as outerwear and it remains popular to this day.
Fishnet t-shirts and fishnet polo shirts had some popularity in
mainstream fashion, however it was short lived.
T-shirts With Pockets
Many manufactures were by now giving buyers the choice of tees with or without a
pocket.
A popular but short lived model came with the pocket on the
sleeve. It was aimed at smokers who could carry their cigarettes on their sleeve
so as to look ‘cool’.
This idea most likely came from James Dean who made it popular
to carry cigarettes tucked into the sleeve of the t-shirt.
The
1960's T-shirt - Printing and Ringer
Airbrushing was big and screen printing became readily available during this decade and
so followed commercial usage of the t-shirt like never before.
The ringer t-shirt also appeared and although not as popular now, it is still available today.
The unique tuxedo t-shirt was another addition to the 1960's t-shirt collection.
Firm Development in Wet T-shirt Contest
When and where the first
wet t-shirt contest took place is up for conjecture.
And
who could forget the Beatles. For me, they were the greatest and the fact that
you can still buy Beatles t-shirts in the 2008 is no surprise. Beatles
t-shirts are not just an item of respect, they are still a very successful
commercial product.
The wet t-shirt contest is also one of the long lasting
developments of the 1960's t-shirt.
Who would have guessed that a "Bet you'll vote Hippie"
t-shirt would be popular in 2006.
